At 15, Leo Leal heard Sasha and Digweed’s music on a CD for the very first time. Six months later, he bought his first set of turntables. By 16, he was playing alongside some of the most prolific names in the industry as the youngest DJ to hold a residency at Mexico’s most popular after-hours club. Today, such a feat is not entirely unimaginable as DJs appear younger (and arguably more famous) than their predecessors with every passing year. But in the pre-Internet craze and pre-social media (aka self-promotion) era, this accomplishment set Leo apart as a distinct up-and-comer who quickly captured the attention of producers that he, to this day, proudly cites as his heroes. Over a decade later, he has become an integral–not to mention, ubiquitous–member of the current electronic community. From launching his own imprint, Unike Muzik, to continually churning out collaborations with an impressive rolodex of producers, Leo Leal shows no signs of slowing down. In addition to delivering our latest podcast, the busy label boss recently took some time to sit down with Autobrennt’s Renee Rodriguez to discuss the journey from his humble beginnings to his well-deserved success. Both Hispanic, much of the interview took place in their native tongue. What follows is a translated version in which Leo also reveals very exciting–and previously undisclosed–information regarding another special “project” of his that’s currently developing.
