Here at Autobrennt, we’re not shy about our music crush on Disclosure. Fans since the early days of “Streetlight Chronicle” and “Offline Dexterity,” we’ve paid close attention to the UK outfit comprised of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence. Fast forward to 2013 and it’s hardly impossible to avoid seeing their names plastered across major festival fliers and relevant music publications.

Last October, the duo made their NYC debut with performances at Glasslands Gallery and Mercury Lounge. Ahead of their performance, the sibling duo was scheduled to record an exclusive in-studio mix for East Village Radio. As luck would have it, the Autobrennt crew was present for the mix and later witnessed the madness go down in the small but beloved Mercury Lounge. These days, it’d be difficult to catch the talented two-piece performing in such intimate quarters. With that in mind, our afternoon with the duo stands out among some of our fondest music-related memories in recent history.

During our time with the talented two-piece, Guy and Howard revealed they were working hard on finishing up their debut full-length, Settle, set for release on June 23. With just weeks left until it drops, it’s one of the most anticipated releases among electronic music lovers.

In a recent session with Zane Lowe at BBC’s Maida Vale studios, the Lawrence brothers shared a brand new track, “F For You,” recorded live for audiences around the world to enjoy ahead of the album’s release.

Since its inception in 2000, Movement (formerly Detroit Electronic Music Festival) has been attracting thousands of domestic and international music lovers to convene in the original holy grail of techno–Detroit. While there’s no shortage of music festivals these days–perhaps too many, to be honest–Movement is a favorite among the Autobrennt crew. Not only is it held in the birthplace of techno, it also allows like-minded souls to celebrate classic artists, current game-changers, and, perhaps most importantly, gives newcomers a chance to shine. Produced by Paxahau Event Productions, Movement is in a league of its own. Don’t believe us? Just one look at the official lineup and the various parties is proof enough.

Among the stellar guests this year are bona fide names like Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, Stacey Pullen, Masters at Work, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Nicolas Jaar, Matt Tolfrey, Laura Jones, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Chris Malinchak, Soul Clap, Art Department, Nina Kraviz, and many, many more.

With only days left until madness ensues, Rem Loh and Renee Rodriguez have compiled a list of must-do parties, the best places to grab a bite, and, of course, some necessary tips sprinkled throughout, for our readers.

Without further ado, we present the official Autobrennt Survival Guide for Movement 2013. Take notes, kids.

Essential Parties

Friday, May 24

Paxahau Presents Desolatismus: A Movement Opening Party–Bleu (1540 Woodward Ave) / 9pm / $10

The official opening party of this year’s Movement Festival kicks off with a Desolat label showcase, featuring label co-founder Martin Buttrich and rising talent Guti. Sure to deliver on after-dark melodies the label has become known for, this will be one of the best ways to start off your festival weekend.

Saturday, May 25

Circoloco Celebrates Arthur Russell–TV Lounge (2548 Grand River Avenue) / 10pm / $40 at the door

Leave it to Circoloco to book a festival-like line-up for their Movement after party. Musical performances this year include the likes of Detroit legend Carl Craig, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtis, D’Julz, Kim Ann Foxman, Gavin Herlihy, Droog, Tone of Arc and many more. This year, however, they come together to celebrate the visionary musician Arthur Russell, whose work and career have been an inspiration to many in dance/electronic music.

CLR (Official Movement After Party)–St. Andrews Hall (431 East Congress) / 10pm / $30

Chris Liebing and friends return for a 3rd year to present a CLR label showcase. As one of techno’s most established labels, CLR has whipped up quite an impressive lineup to keep festivities going into the early morning. Chris Liebing will be joined on the decks by fellow friends: Marcel Dettmann, Radio Slave, Drumcell, Tommy Four Seven, Bryan Kasenic and OKTAFORM.

Jak Attak–City Club (400 Bagley Street) / 11pm / $30-35

Richie Hawtin has made his mark as one of today’s most important figures in techno and dance music through his innovation and dedication to the music, and it would only be fitting to see him in his element at peak hours at one of the premier techno festivals in the world. Accompanying Hawtin for the night will be Gaiser (Live), Dubfire, Paco Osuna, Carlo Lio and others.

Sunday, May 26

Life and Death presented by Liaison Artists–St. Andrews Hall (431 East Congress) / $35 at the door (limited)

One of the most talked about labels of recent times is making their return to Detroit with plans for producing one of the most stellar parties at this year’s Movement festival. In conjunction with Liaison Artists, this year’s performances will include Clockwork, Maceo Plex, Tale of Us, Magda, DJ Tennis and Thugfucker–just to name a few. Located at the iconic St. Andrews Hall, this event will not only celebrate Detroit and its techno roots but also its unique architecture and city culture.

Flying Circus and No. 19–City Club (400 Bagley Street) / 10pm / $25-35

Joining forces this year, Flying Circus and No19 are aimed at throwing one of the most memorable parties of this year’s Movement Festival. Both brands have been making waves internationally with their parties, productions, artists and this year we get to enjoy both their works at one venue! Music talent will be far from scarce as they have quite a stellar lineup booked, including Art Department, Audiofly, Benoit & Sergio, Blond:ish, Clarian, Nitin, Nina Kraviz and more.

Sheik ‘N’ Beik & Detroited Presents: Fort The Record / 2pm

Sheik ‘N’ Beik and Detroited have something special planned for this year’s attendees of Movement by attempting to break the world record for the largest back-to-back vinyl only DJ mixing session. The aim is to not only break the world record, but to also bring a community together through art, science and music. Event participation is heavily encouraged through different outlets such as: artists, builders, food vendors, community groups and even DJs helping to set the record. A far cry from your regular Movement afterparty, “Fort The Record” has all the elements for an engaging event in aims of connecting individuals.

Monday, May 27

Need I Say More–Old Miami (3930 Cass) / TBA / TBA

Quite possibly the longest running and most hyped about party during Movement, Need I Say More makes its return to Old Miami. Put together by Detroit natives Visionquest, they have been throwing these phenomenal closing party for Movement for the past 7 years and each year becomes the most talked about event by all the attendees. As they close in on their 8th installment of Need I Say More who knows what surprises they have in store for us and how they plan to celebrate the city they love. Details have yet to be released but keep your eyes and ears open as this one is not to be missed.

Endgame–TV Lounge (2548 Grand River Avenue) / Noon / $15-20

Endgame, a fitting name for a closing party to end your Movement experience. Most of the time at the end of a festival the mind and body begin to feel the wear and tear of the nights before, which is the perfect case to make your way to Endgame as they’ll not only be providing quality music from a bevy of talented DJs but they’ll also have BBQ and free fruits to replenish some of that energy. Keeping you entertained throughout the day and into the night will be Delano Smith, Three, D’Julz, Francis Harris (aka Adultnapper), Terrence Dixon LiVE, Taimur Agha, Bob Moses LiVE, Jubliee and others.

Grab Some Grub

There’s no doubt Movement requires tons of energy. Instead of burning out early, take a moment to refuel with some local grub. While Hart Plaza has some food options, you might want something a bit more substantial than a quick fix to keep you going. We’ve compiled a short list of nearby restaurants within walking distance (or a quick cab ride away if you’re feeling tired) that won’t break your wallet.

#ProTips

Bring ear plugs!

Seriously, we can’t stress that enough. Some of us have first-hand experience with the consequences and dangers of tinnitus–better known as that annoying ringing noise you sometimes experience after shows, only this is permanent. While it hasn’t deterred us from enjoying what we love most, it has certainly taught us to always have some ear plugs ready. We promise it won’t compromise your listening experience. If you can’t afford the high-end kind, local drugstores carry plenty of affordable foam varieties. Buy a pack and share extras with friends. Oh, and this isn’t just a tip for Movement–always protect yo’ hearing!

Stay hydrated

While obvious, you’d be surprised how many folks end up ignoring this tip. It’s going to be hot, you’re going to be dancing, you’ll need water and lots of it. The festival won’t allow you to carry in any outside drinks (or food) so don’t try to bring your own.

Wear comfortable shoes

Like any big festival, you’re going to be on your feet for a while. Don’t make the mistake of wearing those super trendy new shoes without breaking them in first. Or, if you’re like us, you’ll stick to comfortable classics.

Bring hand sanitizer

One word: port-a-potties. You’ll thank us later when you don’t catch some mysterious bug and end up ruining your weekend.

Carry cash

Unless you want to add on exorbitant ATM fees to your already expensive weekend, take out cash beforehand with you and keep it in a safe place. You’re also more mindful about spending when you see that ca$h money disappearing before your eyes versus endlessly swiping that plastic buddy of yours.

Check day-to-day weather

Spring/summer weather is incredibly unpredictable. It might be gloriously sunny on Saturday and there might be a downpour on Sunday. Be ready for either situation.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst and always be safe

Just as weather can be unpredictable, so can other things. While no one we know has ever had a bad time at Movement–quite the opposite, in fact–you can’t always expect things to go according to plan. If you accept that fact sooner rather than later, you’ll be happier in the long run. If something unexpected does happen, go with the flow. Don’t let it hinder your experience too much–unless it’s something serious. In that case, don’t panic. Breathe and ask for help immediately.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Whether it’s your first time going or your 10th, enjoy this weekend to the fullest. This involves paying attention to the music! Feel free to Instagram your favorite sets to your heart’s desire, but don’t spend the whole time experiencing the music through a lens. If you do post some pictures, share your experience with us by including #MovementAutobrennt in your posts. Then put the camera away for a bit and dance until you can’t anymore.

In the wake of Freak n Chic folding a couple of years ago, Franck Roger has helmed his Real Tone Records imprint to the top of the pile in France. Releasing an on-point blend of house and tech from himself and a cosmopolitan selection of others like Burnski, M A N I K and Maya Jane Coles. For the second biggest artistic statement of his career to date, though, Roger opts for fellow French label Circus Company for the release of his next album, Extensions of Yesterday.

In 2013 it seems you can’t look anywhere without seeing some old label revived, some retro deep house pastiche or a forgotten producer back to the fore. As such the album’s title is an apt one, with seemingly everything done in the modern world of house not that far removed from the styles of yesteryear. In fact not just yesteryear, but yesterday, with genre cycles getting ever smaller, ever tighter, and forgotten ones coming back to bite us before we even knew they had left.

Thankfully though this is not a revivalist album from Roger, he’s old and wise enough to have been there first time round. That said, there are familiar and nostalgic tropes on display, but sufficiently repackaged so as not to sound all too familiar. Opening with the spiralling melodies and celestial whimsy of I Want You, the album wastes no time before settling straight into a dancefloor groove.

Calixto has a nagging bassline roaming beneath well-poised drums as a gurgling bass sound rumbles and bubbles through the arrangement. It’s moody and soupy for the late night hours, where other tracks like Feel It are more direct and immediately dance-y, with infectious hand claps and myriad analogue lines and quirky samples colouring the airwaves in a charming manner.

As things progress, Roger knows moods and tempos must vary to keep your attention, and so they do, through soupy melodic swirls that wallow like oil on a puddle, grainy, dubbed out almost-techno and puff-chested house that glistens and gleans brightly, proving that Roger by no means relies on standard sounds and synths to craft his music, but instead thinks outside the box. This is house music, but not as we most commonly know it.

Launched by UK-based duo Audiofly (Luca Saporito, Anthony Middleton), Flying Circus is an ongoing series of parties taking place around the world. Over the last six years, they’ve amassed a cult-like following with international revelers coming out for their parties across different corners of the globe.

This summer, the illustrious team has landed a summer residency at none other than the lauded Sankeys Ibiza. Beginning July 12 through October 4, 2013, they’ll be hosting a revolving roster of some of the world’s best electronic talent every Friday including but not limited to Carl Craig, Mathew Jonson, Tiefschwarz, Martin Buttirch (Live), Guti, Lee Burridge, Lee Curtis, dOP, Thugfucker, Hot Since 82, Finnebassen, Benoit & Sergio, and more.

Teaming up with Labyrinth Productions (known for their parties in Belgium and the Netherlands), Flying Circus Ibiza promises to deliver pure, deep, and unconstrained house and techno supported by the Void sound system. With a seemingly endless list of electronic/dance parties to choose from these days, what keeps people coming back to Flying Circus is its unadulterated, “no bullshit” approach while swapping out excessive glitz for a genuinely good time. The same is expected of their upcoming residency.

“No frills and no VIP section doesn’t mean grungy–it means you can’t pay to be cool,” according to the Head of Promotions of Flying Circus Ibiza. “It also means, as hosts, we need to really connect with our guests and show them a phenomenal time.”

To celebrate their arrival, Audiofly will be hosting a pre-opening teaser party on Tuesday, May 28. The envy-worthy lineup includes none other than Carl Craig, Lee Burridge, Martin Buttrich Blond:ish, Maayan Nidam, Avatism, Ultrasone, and, of course, the revered party hosts.

“As this is our first season here on the island, we didn’t feel the need to ‘theme it up’ any more than it already is. We bring the circus anyway laughs],” say the duo. “Any more would be overkill! A mixture of state of the art visuals, a sound system to die for, and modern take on what a circus is all about. See you on the island.”

Pre-sale tickets are currently available for those lucky to be visiting the beautiful island this summer.

When: Tuesday, May 28. 2013

Where: Sankeys Ibiza (Carrer de les Alzines 5, Playa d’en Bossa)

Admission: 25€ pre-sale, 35€ at the door

Rami Deejay is a local New York fixture who’s slowly blooming into an international figure. Many of us are already familiar with his work within the local scene, playing along acts such as Damian Lazarus, Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed, Jody Wisternoff, Jamie Jones and Luke Fair just to name a few.

His productions are gaining popularity as well, beginning to touch ears from individuals all over the world. His most recent rework of Spanish Sahara by Foals captured the crowd and held everyone in awe as it pulsed and crooned over the air at Robot Heart. One of the highlights of the night for us, we have since had this gorgeous track on repeat throughout the week.

The future looks bright from Rami Deejay and we can’t wait to see what else he has in store for us.

Tonight we are throwing a party and headlining are PBR Streetgang. The Leeds based duo of Tom Thorpe and Bonar Bradbury are fine purveyors of low slung house and disco on labels like Hot Creations, Futureboogie and Wolf Music, always with plenty of cosmic energy and production prowess. As for a taste of the DJ sets they have weaved across the globe – including during their enduring residency at Space Ibiza – you’re best checking out the podcast they did for us recently before you dive into this interview in which you will learn about the origins of the duo, their approach in the studio and their mutual appreciation of electronic music history.

When did you guys first meet? What drew you to each other? What was the catalyst to start making music together?

We met in Birmingham through mutual friends in a record store around 12 years ago. I had recently moved down from Huddersfield to run tours for a well-known clubbing brand. Bonar was promoting and running another party in the city. We quickly found we had very similar taste in music and DJs. We then started doing a few DJ gigs together which soon became the norm. When we had moved up to Leeds Bonar had started making music so the natural step was then to trying making music together, this was around six years ago.

Is it because your musical backgrounds are so similar or so different that it works so well? Who comes from where, musically speaking?

We both have similar taste and appreciation for music styles, acts, bands, dj’s and producers but we were brought up and listened to different things in our youth; i went down the indie route listening to the likes of ‘the cure’, ‘stone roses’ and Bonar was more into the funk soul sounds of ‘Stevie Wonder’ and ‘Prince’… between us both we covered a lot of bases which definitely makes things fun in the studio.

And does each of you have a set role in the studio, do you do certain things each or do you both do everything?

Bonar is at the desk pushing the buttons (so to speak). We try and make the process a fun experience which is why there is a fair bit of hardware in the studio these days, sometimes the most interesting hooks and riffs come from just having fun and jamming on a vintage keyboard or synth. Being a duo we bounce off one another so an idea can quickly develop, cups of tea tend to be a great catalyst too!

What is it about the music you make that makes you like it? So why disco and not, say, prog? Is it the emotion or the technicals of making it you like or the history or…?

I think it’s the history and appreciation we both have for house but especially disco music that is the root of where our music ultimately comes from. Our initial connection was disco music and disco DJs and producers, we would go check out the likes of Danny Krivit, Joe Claussell, and Kenny Dope when they we’re playing in town. When we set up the ‘Asylum’ parties in Leeds ten years ago the bookings would reflect our taste, Victor Rosardo, Greg Wilson, Idjut boys, and Maurice Fulton we’re big favourites… we’ are a couple of disco nerds really!

You seem to be growing in stature more than ever this year (not least with the recent R1 feature); does it feel like that your side? Have you done anything differently recently or do you feel you have found your sound or…?

It definitely feels like it’s all going in the right direction and of course being on Radio 1 is going to help, we are lucky that Pete Tong is supporting our music.

We’re not doing anything different, I think it’s more we are finding a sound and becoming more competent in the studio. Our backgrounds are as DJs rather than producers so the process of establishing ourselves with a sound hasn’t necessarily come naturally or quickly, but I think you can tell through our latest productions that we have found a groove a sound that we are happy with and it’s everything is rolling now, the gig schedule is definitely more hectic that it’s ever been!

Are you influenced by outside things such as your base in Leeds, the weather, experiences, or does your music come more from inside you do you think?

The weather, you kidding… try living in Yorkshire! I think it’s probably a mix of both, what comes from within and experiences we have encountered. We’re both very social people and like to travel and check out new places, so definitely feed from time away. We always get a buzz and inspiration after going to Glastonbury festival, Croatia, and Ibiza, this will have a knock on effect when making music in the studio.

What’s the writing process like as you vary stylistically a fair bit – do you know what you are making when you first sit down or is it trial and error? Do you sketch on laptops when touring or…?

In the early days it was very much trial and error but these days we normally have a vision of the end result before we start making something. We find it’s a good way of working as it helps make pieces of music we make more coherent. Our tastes are very broad and I think that just naturally comes out when were making music which means as you said our output does vary stylistically, but we try to have a common thread that runs through them, how ever loose that might be! Yes we do sketch out a lot of stuff on laptops, being planes and trains all the time is part of job but it can be a great place for ideas as there are no distractions of Phones, internet etc ..

What’s it like being residents at Space? Different than playing your average intimate club I guess. What challenges does it pose? Do you like it as much as smaller gigs?

It’s a huge honour to be residents at ‘We Love’ at Space, it’s probably the most famous club in the world so we never take it for granted and always make sure we deliver our best performance every time we play. it’s very much been a dream come try, we started playing in one of the side rooms six years ago and built our way up through the ranks and now we play peak time on the main terrace. The set up, sound, and technical support in that room is next level. It’s obviously very different to a small intimate gig but when it’s good in that room not much touches it!

You just came and played in the States here for the first time – how was it? How did it differ from other gigs?

We had a lot of fun when we came over for WMC, we played some really cool parties along side some great artists, the Redbull event was particularly fun, being on the same bill as dj Harvey, Osunlade, Pillow Talk, Maxxi Soundsystem, and Jaques Renault was very exciting. We are looking forward to coming back for our first official debut tour this month to check out cities, parties, and people to see how the scene differs from that of Europe.

What else you got coming up/are you excited about?

The US tour (as i mentioned earlier) is an obvious highlight, we will be in San Francisco, New York, L.A, Miami this May. The summer time always means a fun packed time gigging; Glastonbury festival, Croatia, Ibiza are key parties in our diary which we look forward to, also some gigs we’ve not done before like Lovebox Festival too.

On the release front we have an e.p coming on Waze & Odyssey’s new label ‘NWGTN’, and a collaboration with Amos from Waifs & Stays plus remixes on Leftroom and Get Physical.

Back in January, we launched our ongoing weekly series, “Song of the Week,” with “Gone 4 Ever” by Swiss duo Animal Trainer. Since then we’ve kept in touch with the illustrious two-piece, comprised of Adrian Flavor and Samy Jackson. They’ve recently done us the honor of delivering a special mix to our official podcast series.

Members of the prolific Stil vor Talent family, Adrian and Samy certainly know a thing or two about entertaining crowds and this mix is no different. Kicking off with their own track “To Give” before transitioning to a remix of James Blake’s “Wilhelm Scream” by Samu.l and later weaving through other notable gems while sprinkling in a few more of their own, the mix is ripe with infectious tracks that will keep you wanting more from Animal Trainer.

In 1999, Donell Jones released “U Know What’s Up”. An overnight success, the smash hit could be heard playing over the airwaves and on TV screens in America as well as abroad before peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and No. 2 in the U.K. The official remix of the track featuring the late, great Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes also went on to receive widespread critical acclaim.

More than a decade later, the R&B gem is still capturing audiences–only this time in the form of an infectious garage/house edit by revered producer Joy Orbison titled “Donell”. Though listeners were able to stream the track online late last year, it only recently became available for download, making many patients fans very happy.

Take advantage of the free download while you can, turn it up and enjoy.

After a debut LP, Word of Mouth, that offered some great moments, Matt Tolfrey here serves up its second single, complete with two rather unpredicted remixes in the form of Marco Bernadi and the inimitable DJ Sprinkles. The single in original form, ‘Encarta’, is a blissed-out, end of night house affair doused in warm chords, circled by thin pads and propelled by some nice loose limbed drum work.

The first of the remixes comes from Marco Bernadi, who is most often found at home on Clone crafting grainy, 80s indebted and seriously analogue house. He brings some of that raw jack to the table here, fuzzing up the lines and squeezing more character out of the synths with the results being that bit more immediate, twitching your senses and synapses into action as it goes. DJ Sprinkles goes the other way, smoothing out the form of Encarata into a vast and liquid puddle of doleful pads and panning melodies. The softly-softly beats roll in and out of ear shot and the whole thing is such a sultry sonic soup its impossible for it to not creep into your brain and sooth you into a reverent daydream.
